Joydens Wood Junior School

Science

At Joydens Wood Junior School, we use elements from the Pzaz scheme of work to support the implementation of this subject. This ensures a strong depth and breadth of skills and knowledge is covered.

Intent

At Joydens Wood Junior School, we understand the importance of providing children with key foundational scientific knowledge alongside regular opportunities for practical exploration. As a result, our children develop a sense of ‘awe and wonder’ through different learning experiences, which encourage them to investigate, research, and reason.

We aim to provide our children with learning experiences beyond the classroom, further developing essential skills which will help them succeed into adult life.

Implementation

Teachers use and adapt the Pzaz science scheme of work, which aligns closely with the national curriculum. It provides a high-quality science education with foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Questioning throughout the units encourage children to apply their subject skills, knowledge and understanding

At Joydens Wood Junior School, the curriculum develops with increasing depth and challenge as children move through the year groups. The innovative, and sequential lessons, encourage children to make connections between prior knowledge and experience. Pupils are taught to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes and trends.

Children are explicitly taught scientific skills, such as predicting outcomes and creating a hypothesis with increasing complexity. Wherever possible, practical experiments, science clubs, visits and inspirational guests further enhance the science provision at Highfield.

Impact

All children at Joydens Wood Junior School will acquire the ability to know more, remember more and explain more about the subject. They will leave Year 6 with a wider range of scientific skills and a richer scientific vocabulary. They would have had opportunities to apply their scientific knowledge and understanding and we aim for them to have an enjoyment and enthusiasm about science. We want them to have the ability to relate science lessons to real-life situations and the importance of science in the real world.
