Joydens Wood Junior School

Music

At Joydens Wood Junior School we use elements from the Kapow scheme of work to support the implementation of this subject. This ensures a strong depth and breadth of skills and knowledge is covered.

Intent

At Joydens Wood Junior School, we believe that a high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a lifelong love of music. By bringing high-quality live music & interaction into the classroom, we want children to develop key musical skills and techniques, whilst inspiring them through live performance.

Implementation

We teach children to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control developing and building on the skills above. In addition, we develop their understanding of musical composition, manipulating ideas within musical structures and developing their aural memory skills.

  • We perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using the voice and various instruments with accuracy, fluency, control and expression.

  • We improvise and compose music as a team using the inter-related dimensions of music.

  • We develop our aural memory skills and learn to understand staff and other musical notations.

  •  We reference recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians thus developing an understanding of the history of music.

One year group will have their curriculum lessons delivered in partnership with a specialist provider. We work closely with Kent Music so that children are given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument taught by qualified musicians.

Impact

We want to provide the opportunity for them to develop their talents as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
